Jewish Gematria is a numerical system used to chart and analyze words that have specific meaning within the context of the Hebrew language. This system of numerology is used in Jewish mysticism, in the study and interpretation of sacred texts, and to discover hidden meaning within words of sacred texts. Its origin dates back to early Jewish astrology and is believed to have been passed down from generation to generation. There are several different calculation methods which are all seen as legitimate forms of gematria.
Gematria works by assigning certain numerical values to each letter in a word, phrase or name. Generally, the standard Hebrew alphabet (Aleph, Beth, Gimel etc.) is used for these calculations and the number assigned to each letter is based on its placement in the alphabet: Alef has a numerical value of one while Tav has a value of 400. Combining these numbers yields the gematria result - a number which can be used as part of an overall analysis or as a keyword in search criteria when looking for specific references in holy texts.
Gematria also plays a role in kabbalistic prayer recitations - words with special meanings or power can be chosen according to their gematria number when reciting prayers. Additionally, those who practice gematria use it as part of their meditative practice – for example, reflecting on words with certain meanings associated with numbers which have greater personal significance can be seen as bringing spiritual insight into one's day-to-day life.
